Metallic silicon (crystalline silicon or industrial silicon)
Classification:
Tag:
Metal silicon, also known as crystalline silicon or industrial silicon, is a product smelted from quartz and coke in an electric furnace. Its main component is silicon, with a content of about 98%, and the remaining impurities include iron, aluminum, calcium, etc. The properties of metal silicon are similar to those of germanium, lead, and tin, possessing semiconductor properties, but it is insoluble in acid at room temperature and easily soluble in alkali.
Appearance of metal silicon:
The appearance of metal silicon is usually silver-gray crystalline, with a relatively smooth surface, free from roughness or protrusions caused by oxidation products.
Standards of metal silicon:
Industrial silicon, also known as metal silicon or crystalline silicon, is an important industrial material widely used in metallurgy, chemical industry, machinery, electrical appliances, aviation, shipping, energy, and other fields. Metal silicon is produced by smelting quartz and carbonaceous reducing agents in a submerged arc furnace, with the silicon content being around 98% (in recent years, those with Si content of 99.99% are also included in metal silicon), and the remaining impurities include iron, aluminum, calcium, etc. It is classified into various specifications based on its different uses, and according to the content of iron, aluminum, and calcium in metal silicon, it can be divided into different grades such as 553, 441, etc.

Uses of metal silicon:
The uses of metal silicon are extensive, mainly in the following aspects:
The appearance of metal silicon is usually silver-gray crystalline, with a relatively smooth surface, free from roughness or protrusions caused by oxidation products.
1. Semiconductor industry: Metal silicon is an important component of semiconductor materials, used in the manufacture of integrated circuits, solar panels, LEDs, and other electronic devices. Its high purity and good electronic performance are widely applied in the electronics industry.
2. Steel smelting: In the metallurgical industry, metal silicon is an important alloy raw material. Adding an appropriate amount to steel can improve its hardness, strength, and wear resistance, enhancing its physical and chemical properties.
3. Casting industry: Metal silicon can be used as a casting material to improve the toughness and thermal fatigue resistance of castings, reducing defects and deformation in cast parts.
4. Solar thermal power generation: Metal silicon is also used in solar thermal power generation, where solar energy is focused on the surface of metal silicon to convert light energy into thermal energy, which is then used to generate steam to drive a turbine generator.
5. Preparation of nanomaterials: Through suitable chemical reactions and processing methods, metal silicon can be transformed into nanoparticles, nanowires, or nanosheets.
